Spatial patterns of rainfall and shallow landslide susceptibility

چکیده
[1] We quantify the effect of spatial patterns in climatological rainfall on shallow landslide susceptibility by forcing a physically based model of slope stability (SHALSTAB) with the rainfall pattern produced by a high-resolution atmospheric model (MM5) over the western Olympic Mountains of Washington State. Our results suggest that for two small basins in the Olympics, 10 km–scale variations in rainfall have a nontrivial effect on landslide susceptibility. Assuming uniform rainfall equal to the average rainfall over the basins results in a moderate underestimate of landslide susceptibility. Using climatological data from a lowland station to characterize the rainfall over the basins results in a substantial underestimate of susceptibility. The effect of spatial variability in rainfall on variations in stability is comparable to the effect of moderate-to-large variability in soil parameters (such as ±30% variations in soil thickness). At a practical level, these results imply that accounting for persistent patterns of rainfall may aid in discerning regions within the same watershed where similar land use practices will lead to differing landslide risk.

Integration of spatial and temporal data for the definition of different landslide hazard scenarios in the area north of Lisbon (Portugal)
A general methodology for the probabilistic evaluation of landslide hazard is applied, taking in account both the landslide susceptibility and the instability triggering factors, mainly rainfall. The method is applied in the FanhõesTrancão test site (north of Lisbon, Portugal) where 100 shallow translational slides were mapped and integrated into a GIS database. For the landslide susceptibility...
متن کاملMulti-stage Statistical Landslide Hazard Analysis: Rain-Induced Landslides
Recurrence of rain-induced landslides is controlled by the repetition of rain events. Therefore, rainfall induced landslide hazard analysis is more complicated than a conventional rainfall frequency analysis, and requires multi-stage procedures. It requires a susceptibility analysis to divide a region into successive classes at the first stage. Then, the relationship between the probability of ...
متن کاملDistributed modelling of shallow landslides triggered by intense rainfall
Hazard assessment of shallow landslides represents an important aspect of land management in mountainous areas. Among all the methods proposed in the literature, physically based methods are the only ones that explicitly includes the dynamic factors that control landslide triggering (rainfall pattern, land-use). For this reason, they allow forecasting both the temporal and the spatial distribut...
متن کاملPredicting Shallow Landslide Initiation
The growing availability of digital topographic data and the increased reliability of precipitation forecasts invite modelling efforts to predict the timing and location of shallow landslides in hilly and mountainous areas in order to reduce risk to an ever-expanding human population. Here, we exploit a rare data set to develop and test such a model. In a 1·7 km catchment a near-annual aerial p...
متن کاملEvaluation of a preliminary satellite-based landslide hazard algorithm using global landslide inventories
Most landslide hazard assessment algorithms in common use are applied to small regions, where highresolution, in situ, observables are available. A preliminary global landslide hazard algorithm has been developed to estimate areas of potential landslide occurrence in near real-time by combining a calculation of landslide susceptibility with satellite derived rainfall estimates to forecast areas...
